Takhrij Hadith 1884: "I went to Abu Thaʿlabah…"

I went to Abu Thaʿlabah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: “How do you deal with this verse?” He said: “Which verse?” I said: “The saying of Allah, Exalted is He: {O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.} He said: “By Allah, I asked someone who was knowledgeable about it. I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: “Rather, enjoin one another to do what is right and forbid one another from what is wrong, until you see stinginess being obeyed, desires being followed, worldly life being preferred, and every person of opinion being pleased with his own opinion. Then concern yourself with your own affairs and leave the common people, for ahead of you are days in which patience will be like holding a burning ember. The one who acts righteously during them will have the reward of fifty men who do what you do.”
