Takhrij Hadith 2130: "During the Battle of Tabuk,…"
Narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
“
During the Battle of Tabuk, a man said in a gathering: "We have never seen anyone like these reciters of ours: they are more desirous of food, more lying in speech, and more cowardly when facing the enemy." A man in the gathering said: "You have lied! Rather, you are a hypocrite. I will surely inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Qur’anic revelation came down. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar said: "I saw him clinging to the girth strap of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with stones striking him as he walked, while he was saying: 'O Messenger of Allah, we were only chatting idly and joking.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: {Was it Allah, His verses, and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuses; you have disbelieved after having believed.}(Quran 9:65-66)”
