Takhrij Hadith 2152: "When ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may…"
Narrated by ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
“
When ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in Syria, he said to Abu ʿUbaydah: "Take us to your home." He said: "What would you do at my home?" ʿUmar said: "Take us there." He said: "You only want to make your eyes overflow with tears over me." So he entered his home, but ʿUmar saw nothing in it. He said: "Where are your belongings? I see nothing but a felt woollen mat, an old worn-out waterskin, and a bowl, yet you are a governor! Do you have any food?" Abu ʿUbaydah stood up and went to a basket, from which he took out a few pieces of dry bread. ʿUmar began to weep. Abu ʿUbaydah said to him: "I told you that you would make your eyes overflow with tears over me. O Commander of the Faithful, the little of this world that carries you to your resting place is sufficient for you." ʿUmar said: "The world has changed us all, except you, O Abu ʿUbaydah."”
