Takhrij Hadith 386: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ…"
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated:
“
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of my beard—and I could see sadness on his face—and said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. Jibril has just come to me and said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” I said: “Yes, indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. But why is that, O Jibril?” He said: “Your nation will be afflicted by trials after you, after only a short period of time”. I said: “Will it be a trial of disbelief or a trial of misguidance?” He replied: “Both will occur”. I said: “How can that be when I am leaving among them the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic?” He said: “Through the Book of Allah they will go astray. The beginning of this will come from their rulers and their reciters. The rulers will withhold people's rights, and the people will demand their rights but will not be given them. As a result, they will become resentful, deceive one another, and fight among themselves. And the reciters will follow the desires of the rulers, supporting them in their transgression and not refraining from it”. I said: “O Jibril, then by what means will those who remain safe be saved?” He replied: “By self-restraint and patience. If they are given what is rightfully theirs, they should take it; and if it is withheld from them, they should leave it and remain patient” .”
