When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the Throne on the Night of al-Miʿraj (the Ascension), he wished to remove his sandals. Then a call came to him: “Why are you removing your sandals?” He replied: “My Lord, I feared the consequence of being driven away and the bitterness of being turned back, and that it might be said to me as it was said to my brother Moses”. Then it was said: “O Muhammad, if Moses sought, you are the one sought; if Moses loved, you are the beloved; if Moses requested, you are the one requested. You are the close one, and you are the beloved”.
