Takhrij Hadith 487: "We said, 'O Messenger of…"

Narrated by Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

“
We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how did you come to know that you were a Prophet?' He said: 'I did not know it until I was informed of it, O Abu Dharr. Two angels came to me while I was in one of the open valleys of Makkah. One of them said: "Is this him?" Then he said: "Weigh him against one man." So I was weighed against a man, and I outweighed him. Then he said: "Weigh him against ten." So I was weighed against ten men, and I outweighed them. Then he said: "Weigh him against one hundred." So I was weighed against one hundred men, and I outweighed them. Then he said: "Weigh him against one thousand." So I was weighed against one thousand men, and I outweighed them. Then one of the angels said to the other: "If you were to weigh him against his entire nation, he would outweigh them". Then one of them said to the other: "Open his chest." So my chest was opened, and from it he removed the portion belonging to Satan and the clot of blood attached to it, and cast them away. Then one of them said to the other: "Wash his chest as a vessel is washed, and wash his heart as a garment is washed." Then he brought tranquility (sakīnah), which appeared like a white cloud, and it was placed into my heart. Then one of them said to his companion: "Sew up his chest." So my chest was sewn up, and they placed the seal between my shoulders. After they departed from me, it was as though I was beholding the matter with my own eyes.'" And in the version of Ibn Maʿmar, there is the addition: "They began scattering upon me from the pan of the scale.
