Takhrij Hadith 493: "Trials and tribulations will come…"

Trials and tribulations will come upon you like pieces of a dark night. A man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by the evening, and a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by the morning. One of you will sell his religion for a small gain from this worldly life. I said: "Then what should we do, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Let your hand be broken." I said: "And if it heals?" He said: "Then let the other be broken." I said: "And if it heals?" He said: "Then let your leg be broken." I said: "And if it heals?" He said: "Then let the other be broken." I said: "Until when?" He said: "Until a sinful hand reaches you, or an inevitable death comes to you."
