Takhrij Hadith 497: "The wives of the Prophet…"
‘Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated:
“
The wives of the Prophet ﷺ used to go out at night when they needed to relieve themselves, to Al-Manasiʿ, which was an open, spacious area. ‘Umar would say to the Prophet ﷺ: “Let your wives be veiled”. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do so. One night, Sawdah the daughter of Zam‘ah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, went out after the night prayer, and she was a tall woman. ‘Umar called out to her: “Indeed, we have recognized you, O Sawdah!” out of his eagerness that the command of hijab be revealed. Then Allah revealed the Verse of Hijab.”
