Takhrij Hadith 581: "The first form in which…"
On the authority of ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
“
The first form in which revelation came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the true dream during sleep. He would not see a dream except that it came to pass as clearly as the break of dawn. Then he would go to Hira, where he would devote himself to worship for a number of nights, taking provisions with him for that purpose. Thereafter, he would return to Khadijah, who would provide him with provisions for another period like it. This continued until the Truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hira. Then the angel came to him and said: "Read". The Prophet ﷺ said: "I said: 'I am not one who can read'". Then he seized me and pressed me until I reached the limit of my endurance. Then he released me and said: "Read". I said: "I am not one who can read". Then he seized me a second time and pressed me until I reached the limit of my endurance. Then he released me and said: "Read". I said: "I am not one who can read". Then he seized me a third time and pressed me until I reached the limit of my endurance. Then he released me and said: "{Read in the Name of your Lord Who created}", until he reached: "{what he did not know} ".Thereupon, he returned with it while the muscles of his neck and shoulders were trembling, until he entered upon Khadijah and said: "Cover me, cover me". So they covered him until his fear left him. Then he said: "O Khadijah, what is wrong with me?". He informed her of what had happened and said, "I feared for myself". She said to him: "Never! Rejoice, for by Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. Indeed, you maintain family ties, speak truthfully, bear the burdens of others, honor the guest, and assist people in righteous causes". Then Khadijah took him to Waraqah ibn Nawfal ibn Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza ibn Qusayy, who was Khadijah's cousin on her father's side. He had embraced Christianity during the Days of Ignorance and used to write in Arabic, writing from the Gospel in Arabic whatever Allah willed him to write. He was an elderly man who had become blind. Khadijah said to him: "O cousin, listen to your nephew". Waraqah said: "My nephew, what have you seen?". The Prophet ﷺ informed him of what he had seen. Waraqah said: "This is the Namus (the bearer of divine revelation) who was sent down to Moses. I wish I were a young man then. I wish I would still be alive when your people drive you out". The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Will they drive me out?". Waraqah replied: "Yes. No man has ever come with what you have brought except that he was met with hostility. If I live to see your day, I will support you with a mighty support". Shortly thereafter, Waraqah passed away, and revelation ceased for a period. The Prophet ﷺ became deeply saddened, according to what has reached us, to the extent that he would repeatedly consider throwing himself from the tops of high mountains. Whenever he reached the summit of a mountain intending to cast himself down, Jibril would appear before him and say: "O Muhammad, you are truly the Messenger of Allah". Thereupon his heart would become calm, his soul reassured, and he would return. Then, whenever the pause in revelation became prolonged, he would go out again for the same purpose. Whenever he reached a mountain summit, Jibril would appear to him and say the same words.”
