Takhrij Hadith 737: "A man named 'Ukkaf ibn…"

A man named 'Ukkaf ibn Bishr al-Tamimi came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'O 'Ukkaf, do you have a wife?' He replied: 'No.' He asked: 'Nor a female slave?' He replied: 'Nor a female slave.' He then asked: 'And are you well-off?' He replied: 'Yes, I am well-off.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Then you are one of the brothers of the devils. If you were among the Christians, you would have been one of their monks. Our Sunnah is marriage. The worst of you are your unmarried men, and the lowest among your deceased are your unmarried men. Are you yielding yourselves to Satan? Satan has no weapon more effective against the righteous than women—except in the case of those who are married. They are the purified ones, kept free from illicit sexual relations. Woe to you, O 'Ukkaf! They are the companions of Ayyub, Dawud, Yusuf, and Karsaf.' Bishr ibn 'Atiyyah asked: 'Who was Karsaf, O Messenger of Allah?' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'He was a man who worshipped Allah on one of the seacoasts for three hundred years. He fasted by day and stood in prayer by night. Then he disbelieved in Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, because of a woman with whom he became infatuated, abandoning the worship of Allah to which he had devoted himself. Thereafter, Allah enabled him to recover himself, and He accepted his repentance. Woe to you, O 'Ukkaf! Get married; otherwise, you will be among those who waver.' 'Ukkaf said: 'Arrange a marriage for me, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'I have married you to Karimah bint Kulthum al-Himyariyyah.'"
