Takhrij Hadith 801: "Abu Bakr proposed marriage to…"
'Ilba' ibn Ahmar al-Yashkuri narrated :
“
Abu Bakr proposed marriage to Fatimah from the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "O Abu Bakr, wait until Allah's decree concerning her becomes clear". Abu Bakr mentioned this to ʿUmar, who said to him: "He has declined your proposal, O Abu Bakr". Then AbU Bakr said to ʿUmar, "Propose marriage to Fatimah from the Prophet ﷺ". So ʿUmar proposed, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him the same as he had said to Abu Bakr: "Wait until Allah's decree concerning her becomes clear". ʿUmar then went to Abu Bakr and informed him, and Abū Bakr said: "He has declined your proposal, O ʿUmar". Thereafter, the family of ‘Ali said to him: "Propose marriage to Fatimah from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ". He replied: "After Abu Bakr and ʿUmar?" They reminded him of his close relationship to the Prophet ﷺ, so he proposed to her, and the Prophet ﷺ gave her to him in marriage. ‘Ali then sold one of his camels and some of his belongings, realizing four hundred and eighty [dirhams]. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Spend two-thirds on perfume and one-third on household furnishings".”
