Takhrij Hadith 816: "I used to serve the…"
On the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“
I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A roasted bird was brought to him, and he said: "O Allah, bring to me the most beloved of Your creation to You, so that he may eat this bird with me". I said to myself: "O Allah, let him be a man from the Ansar". Then ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, but I said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is occupied". He came again, and I again said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is occupied". Then he came a third time, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Open the door". So he entered. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What kept you back, O ‘Ali?" He replied: "This is the third time Anas has turned me away, claiming that you were occupied". The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "What prompted you to do what you did?" I replied: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard your supplication, and I wished that it would be a man from my own people". The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, a man may love his own people".”
