Takhrij Hadith 834: "When ‘Umar (may Allah be…"

On the authority of al-Sa‘ib ibn Mihjan, one of the people of the Levant and from Aelia (Jerusalem), who had met the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he narrated:

“
When ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the Levant, he praised Allah, extolled Him, delivered an admonition, enjoined what is right, and forbade what is wrong. Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once stood among us and delivered a sermon. He commanded us to fear Allah, maintain the ties of kinship, and reconcile people with one another. He said: Hold fast to the community, for the Hand of Allah is with the community. Satan is with the one who is alone, and he is farther away from two. Let no man be alone with a woman, for Satan is the third of them. Whoever is grieved by his bad deed and pleased by his good deed—that is the sign of a believing Muslim. As for the sign of the hypocrite, his bad deed does not grieve him, nor does his good deed please him. If he does a good deed, he does not hope for a reward from Allah for it, and if he does an evil deed, he does not fear Allah's punishment for it. Be moderate in seeking worldly provision, for Allah has indeed guaranteed your sustenance, and everyone is facilitated toward the work that he was destined to do. Seek Allah's help in your deeds, for He erases whatever He wills and confirms (whatever He wills), and with Him is the Mother of the Book." May Allah send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and grant him peace. Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you. This is the sermon of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab to the people of the Levant, transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
