Takhrij Hadith 842: "I was sitting when ‘Ali…"
On the authority of Usamah ibn Zayd, who said:
“
I was sitting when ‘Ali and Al-‘Abbas came and asked permission to enter. They said: "O Usamah, seek permission for us to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ". I said: "O Messenger of Allah, ‘Ali and Al-‘Abbas are asking permission to enter". He said: "Do you know what has brought them here?" I replied: "No". The Prophet ﷺ said: "But I do. Let them enter". They entered and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have come to ask you: Which member of your family is dearest to you?" He replied: "Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad". They said: "We did not come to ask you about your immediate family". He said: "Among my family, the dearest to me is the one upon whom Allah has bestowed His favor and upon whom I have bestowed favor: Usamah ibn Zayd". They asked: "Then who?" He replied: "Then ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib". Al-‘Abbas said: "O Messenger of Allah, have you placed your uncle last?" He replied: "Because ‘Ali preceded you in the Hijrah (migrating)".”
