Takhrij Hadith 924: "While I was with ‘Umar…"

Aslam reported:

“
While I was with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) as he was making his night patrol through the city, he became tired and leaned against a wall in the middle of the night. Thereupon, he heard a woman saying to her daughter: 'Get up and mix that milk with water.' The girl replied: 'Mother, did you not hear the order issued by the Commander of the Faithful today?' She asked: 'And what was his order?' The girl said: 'He instructed a caller to proclaim: "Do not mix milk with water."' Her mother said: 'My daughter, get up and mix the milk with water. You are in a place where neither ‘Umar nor ‘Umar's caller can see you.' The young woman replied: 'By Allah, I would never obey him in public and disobey him in private.' ‘Umar heard the entire conversation and said: 'Aslam, mark this door and remember this place.' Then he continued on his night patrol. When morning came, he said: 'Aslam, go to that place and find out who the woman was, who the girl was, and whether they have a husband.' I went to the house and found that the young woman was unmarried and had no husband. The other woman was her mother, and there was no man in their household. I returned to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and informed him. ‘Umar then gathered his sons and said: 'Is there anyone among you who needs a wife so that I may marry him to her? If your father still had any desire to marry, none of you would have preceded him in marrying this young woman.' ʿAbdullah said: 'I have a wife.' ‘Abd al-Rahman said: 'I have a wife.' ‘Asim said: 'Father, I do not have a wife, so marry me to her.' So ‘Umar sent for the young woman and married her to ‘Asim. She gave birth to ‘Asim's daughter, who later gave birth to a daughter, and that daughter gave birth to ʿUmar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him).
