Hadith 244
Language:

Takhrij Hadith 244: "A man came to ‘Umar…"

“
A man came to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab to complain about his wife’s behavior. He stood at ‘Umar’s door waiting for him and heard Umar’s wife speaking harshly to him while ‘Umar remained silent and did not respond to her. So the man turned away saying:“If this is the condition of the Commander of the Faithful, then what about my situation?”. ‘Umar came out and saw him leaving, so he called out: “What do you need?” The man replied: “O Commander of the Faithful, I came to complain to you about my wife’s behavior and her harshness toward me, but then I heard your wife doing the same to you, so I went back saying: if this is the condition of the Commander of the Faithful with his wife, then what about mine?” ‘Umar said to him: “My brother, I bear with her because she has rights over me. She cooks my food, bakes my bread, washes my clothes, and nurses my children, though none of that is obligatory upon her. Through her, my heart finds comfort from what is unlawful, so I endure her for that.” The man said: “O Commander of the Faithful, my wife is the same.” ‘Umar replied: “Then bear with her, my brother, for this life is only a short time.”
