On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him:
“
A Jewish man greeted the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions, saying: "As-samu 'alaykum". The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do you know what he said?" They replied: "Yes, he greeted us with peace". He said: "No. Rather, he said: As-samu ʿalaykum, meaning: May you turn away from your religion (the phrase is also commonly understood as meaning: 'May death be upon you'). Therefore, when one of the People of the Book greets you in this manner, say: “Wa ‘alaykum (And upon you)”.”
