Takhrij Hadith 620: "I heard my father—who had…"

Al-Qasim ibn Mikhwal al-Bahzi, then al-Sulami, said:

“
I heard my father—who had lived through both the pre-Islamic period and Islam—say: "I had set some snares for game at al-Abwaʾ. A gazelle was caught in one of the snares but escaped. I went after it and found a man who had already seized it. We disputed over it, so we went together to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We found him camped at al-Abwaʾ, beneath a tree, taking shade over a leather mat. We presented our dispute to him, and he ruled that it should be divided equally between us. I then said: "O Messenger of Allah, we come across camels whose udders are tied after being left full of milk, and we are in need". He said: "Call out for the owner of the camels three times. If he comes, [obtain permission], otherwise, untie the udders, drink the milk, then tie them again, and leave enough milk in the udder for its natural purpose". I said: "O Messenger of Allah, stray animals come to us. Is there a reward for us if we give them water?" He replied: "Yes. There is a reward for every living creature with a warm liver". Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began speaking to us and said: "A time will come upon the people when the best form of wealth will be sheep grazing between the two mosques [Makkah and Madinah], feeding on trees and drinking from watering places. Their owner will live on their provisions, drink their milk, and clothe himself with their wool"—or he said: "their hair. While tribulations will be raging among the tribal heartlands of the Arabs. By Allah, you will pay no heed", the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated three times. I then said: "O Messenger of Allah, advise me". He said: "Establish the prayer, give the zakah, fast Ramadan, perform the pilgrimage to the House, perform ʿUmrah, be dutiful to your parents, maintain ties of kinship, honor your guest, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and remain with the truth wherever it goes".
