Takhrij Hadith 1451: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ…"

On the authority of Hudhayfah, who said:

“
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrated to us two narrations: I have seen [the fulfillment of] one of them, and I am awaiting the other. He told us that trustworthiness (al-amanah) descended into the root of the hearts of men, then they learned it from the Qur'an, then they learned it from the Sunnah. And he told us about its being lifted, saying: 'A man will sleep, and trustworthiness will be taken from his heart, leaving only a trace like a faint mark. Then he will sleep again, and it will be taken [further], leaving a trace like a blister — like an ember you roll across your foot, causing it to swell up, though there is nothing [substantial] in it. Then people will conduct business with one another, and hardly anyone will fulfill his trust, until it will be said: "In such-and-such tribe there is a trustworthy man," and a man will be said [merely], "How intelligent he is! How refined he is! How strong he is!" — while there is not in his heart so much as a mustard seed's weight of faith. There came upon me a time when I did not care which of you I did business with — if he was a Muslim, his religion would bring him back [to fulfilling the trust]; and if he was a Christian, his governor would return it to me. But today I would not do business with anyone except so-and-so and so-and-so.'”
