Takhrij Hadith 897: ""You are divorced for a…"

"You are divorced for a time (until a ḥīn)." Later, when he calmed down and wished to take her back, he felt too shy to speak directly to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions) . So, he spoke to Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), who replied: "O man, the appointed time for taking her back is the Day of Resurrection! Have you not read the saying of Allah the Exalted: {So they believed, and We gave them enjoyment for a time (ḥīn)}? And here, ḥīn means the Day of Resurrection." So the man went to Ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who answered: "The matter is closer than that, for Allah Almighty said: {Has there [not] come upon man a period of time (ḥīn) when he was not a thing [even] mentioned? } And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions) informed us that ḥīn is the duration Adam spent while fashioned in clay." The man asked: "How long is that?" Ibn al-Khattab replied: "Forty years." This dashed the man's hope, so he went to Ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who answered: "Take it easy, for the matter is simpler, as Allah said concerning the earth: {It produces its fruit all the time (kulla ḥīn) by the will of its Lord}. Thus, ḥīn here means a harvest year." The man rejoiced and wanted the Prophet to confirm 'Uthman's ruling that the duration was only one year. He rushed to him and met Ibn Abi Talib at his door, saying: "Ask permission for me to enter and speak to the Prophet." 'Ali asked: "Why are you so cheerful today?" The man related the story and said: " Ḥīn according to the first means the Day of Resurrection, according to the second forty years, and according to the third one year." 'Ali answered him with a question: "When did you divorce her?" He said: "Yesterday." 'Ali said to him: "Take her back today, and there is no blame upon you." The man was astonished and said: "How is that, O cousin of the Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Did not our Lord say: {So exalted be Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning (ḥīn)}? Thus, ḥīn can be a day, or it can be a night, and you have already spent both a day and a night." The man ran to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet gathered the four companions, listened to each of their views, and said to every one of them: "You have spoken the truth." Meanwhile, the man's eyes moved between them in anxious anticipation. The Prophet then smiled at him and said: "Follow the view of 'Ali, for it is the easiest for you."
