I was with Ibn ‘Abbas when a man came and sat beside him. Ibn ‘Abbas asked, 'Where have you come from?' The man replied, 'I have just drunk from Zamzam.' Ibn ‘Abbas asked, 'Did you drink from it as it ought to be drunk?' The man asked, 'And how is that, O Ibn ‘Abbas?' He replied, 'Face the Qiblah, say Bismillah (In the name of Allah), and drink. Breathe [between sips] three times, and when you have finished, praise Allah. A group of people from 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'O prophet of Allah, we are from this tribe of Rabi'a, and there live between us the unbelievers of Mudar tribe, and we can only reach you during the Sacred Month. So, enjoin upon us something that we may convey to those we left behind, and by which we may enter Paradise if we adhere to it. The messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I command you with four things and forbid you from four: Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, establish prayer, pay Zakah, fast Ramadan, and give one-fifth of the spoils of war; and I forbid you from four: Al-Dubba (gourds), Al-Hantam (green jars), Al-Muzaffat (pitch-smeared vessels), and An-Naqir (hollowed stumps).' They asked: 'O Prophet of Allah, what do you know of An-Naqir?' He replied: 'Indeed, it is a [palm] trunk which you hollow out, then you throw into it small dried dates (Al-Qati’ah)—or he said: dates—and then you pour water into it until its boiling subsides. Then you drink it until one of you—or one of them (other members of your tribe)—strikes his cousin with a sword [intoxicated].' Sa’id said: Among the delegation was a man who had sustained such a wound, and he said: 'I was hiding it out of shyness from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' I asked: 'In what should we drink then, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'In leather waterskins that are tied at their mouths.'They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, our land abounds in rats; the leather waterskins cannot survive there.' The Prophet of Allah ﷺ replied: 'Even if the rats eat them, even if the rats eat them, even if the rats eat them.' And the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said to Al-Ashaj of ‘Abdul-Qais: 'Indeed, you possess two qualities that Allah loves: forbearance and deliberation.' .
A delegation from 'Abdul-Qais came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'We are from this tribe of Rabi'a, and we can only reach you during the Sacred Month. So, enjoin upon us something that we may learn from you and call those we left behind to it.' He said: 'I command you with four things and forbid you from four: Faith in Allah.' He then explained it to them: 'Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, paying Zakah, and that you give me a fifth of the spoils of war that you acquire. I eat just like a servant eats. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if the world were worth to Allah the wing of a mosquito, He would not have given to a disbeliever a single cup [of water] from it
